Hi,
If you want fill color to selected area, in tool box see the background color and foreground color.click on foreground color and choose color what you want/ and press Alt+delete to fill color to selected area..If you want to fill background color press Ctl+delete. or go to Edit menu > choose fill > Use contents> background color or foreground color. Or use paint bucket tool. |

RE: FIll selected area with color
Pattern
Fills the selection with a pattern. Click the inverted arrow next to the pattern sample, and select a pattern from the pop‑up palette. You can load additional patterns using the pop‑up palette menu. Select the name of a library of patterns, or choose Load Patterns and navigate to the folder containing the patterns you want to use. |

RE: FIll selected area with color
You are right and the Paint Bucket is used for by clicking on a pixel in that area. The Paint Bucket tool does not require you to select the area to be filled. Its a proper way.
