Animate an Iris is a step-by-step tutorial that describes how to animate an Iris using Autodesk Maya. This tutorial is aimed for users who are having a familiarity with Maya toolbox.

The first step in animating an Iris is to create two curves and set it as shown in Figure 1. After that, put it in a layer and template it.

Now the nest step is to create a polygonal plane as shown in Figure 2.

The next step is to set the pivot of the new object to the place marked red in Figure 2. After that, you need to group the object to itself. Now the pivot of the group is at the origin. Next, duplicate the group using the SHIFT+D keys, then rotate the duplicated object at a 30 degree angle and keep pressing SHIFT+D until it forms a proper circle. Now the circle will look like Figure 3.

The next step is to create a locator and add an attribute to it with a float value with min 0 and max 10 and default 0

Next, use set driven key with the locator new attribute as driver and all the duplicated planes as drivers and key it.

Now animate the new attribute value and notice that you will get an iris opening effect.
